The design inspiration for "The Wu" came from the desire to create a peaceful environment for the residents. The designer, Yaoming Huang, aimed to minimize unnecessary decorations and furniture to bring people, objects, and spaces closer together. The owner's fondness for European style led to the incorporation of European lines as the basic elements of the design, without compromising the relaxing atmosphere of the home.
"The Wu" is a private house designed for a family of three. The design team integrated minimalist interiors into the entire space, presenting the most natural and simplest space possible. The unique property of this design lies in its ability to create a relaxed and comfortable space for the residents, achieved by abandoning unnecessary ornaments and furniture and using concise lines.
The realization of this design involved the use of European lines as basic elements in space design. These lines, presented in a form that looks curved and straight, virtual and real, dynamic and static, give the space a unique artistic charm. The minimalist design approach endows the lines with a perceptual sublimation. The 145 sqm house features a comfortable space for both the sitting room and dining room, a reading quarter by the bay window, a master room with bathroom, a cozy kid's room, and a walk-in closet, reflecting a new urban family lifestyle.
The design interaction of "The Wu" takes advantage of the original architectural plane. The design team connected the living room and the dining room, making the area open and flexible. The gray wall in the public area clarifies the functionality of the space, while the panel wall with a hidden door is a highlight of the project, making the living environment cleaner and tidier.
The project started in January 2019 in DongGuan and was completed in August 2020. The design research involved creating hidden doors in the living room to make the space look simpler and larger. The storage cupboard is designed as a closed cabinet, with the outer door panels acting as a decorative wall, hiding the storage cupboard and ensuring the space is not oppressive. Overcoming challenges such as the single layout of the house and the excessive number of doors in the living room, the design team managed to create a harmonious balance between public and private spaces.
In conclusion, Yaoming Huang's "The Wu" is a testament to the power of minimalist design. Its unique blend of European style and Asian minimalism, combined with its functional and practical design, has earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award. This design serves as an inspiration for designers and homeowners alike, demonstrating that simplicity can indeed be the ultimate sophistication.
